Mr. Ravindra Kumar Tyagi is working as Director (Operations) at Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID).

He is having work experience of over 32 years in Power Transmission System, out of which over 26 years are in Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of Substations and Transmission lines at various key positions in premier CPSUs in power sector such as POWERGRID and NTPC.

He has handled multi-disciplinary functions in various business segments of POWERGRID like Asset Management, Engineering, Business Development (domestic & abroad), Telecom, Load Despatch & Communication, NTAMC, Safety, DMS etc. Prior to this, he was Executive Director (North Eastern Region) in POWERGRID and has handled functions of Project Execution, Asset Management, Finance, Commercial and various other regional functions.

He is an Electrical Engineer from Punjab Engineering College (P.E.C.), Chandigarh and has completed M.(Tech) in Energy Studies from IIT Delhi. Mr. Tyagi is a Fulbright Scholar from Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, US.

Mr. Tyagi is representing India in many International technical committees for preparing various Technical Standards. He is Author of more than 50 technical papers which have been presented in National and International conferences.

He is Chairperson of International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) National Study Committee C3 (Power System Environmental Performance), Indian representative in various CIGRE study groups on Power Transformers(A2) and Transmission & Distribution Equipment(A3). He is also a Member of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) TC122 (Standardization in the field of AC transmission for voltages exceeding 800kV) & IEC TC123 (Standardization of asset management practices in Power networks), Member of MT36 - representing India for preparation of International Standard, IEC62271-100 on EHV Circuit Breakers, Chairperson of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Committee, Electro-Technical Division (ETD) 53 on Standardization of the management of assets and member of ETD 48 on UHVAC Transmission System.

He was recently conferred with prestigious 1906 Award in Year 2022 for his exceptional contribution in International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) TC 122 towards development of IEC 63042 – Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current (UHVAC) Transmission Systems. He was also honored with CIGRE Paris Award as Distinguished member for development of Technical Standards in the field of Transmission System in the Year 2018.

Dr. R.P. Singh is an internationally acclaimed technocrat and an administrator of repute. He has wide ranging experience in varied fields viz. Power Sector, Infrastructure, Management and Higher Education.  He is known for his signal contributions in the Indian Power Sector particularly the establishment of the Indian National Power Transmission Grid & modern Load Dispatch Centers, both being of world standards, accomplished during his tenure as Chairman & Managing Director of Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) from 1996 to 2008.   At the nascent stage of formation of POWERGRID, his acumen lay in unifying a diverse workforce drawn from nine organizations and establishing internal processes, leading to a decentralized but accountable system, which was result oriented.   He has the distinction of completing almost all the projects either within given time schedules and approved costs or even ahead of schedule and at lesser cost which was appreciated by one and all including national/international funding agencies.

Under Dr. Singh’s leadership, the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of POWERGRID was oversubscribed by 64 times and opened/touched at Rs.100 against the offer price of Rs.52 per share.  He  successfully negotiated and raised loans from private as well as multilateral funding agencies viz. The World Bank, Asian Development Bank, KfW, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) etc.  He is also a pioneer in formation of Joint Ventures between POWERGRID and private & State owned companies.

During his tenure, consumer satisfaction was demonstrated by POWERGRID by ensuring that there was no grid failure from 2002 to 2008, a feat internationally recognized.  His crisis management skills were tested during the Odisha super-cyclone and Gujarat earthquake. Both emergency restoration and normalization of the transmission systems were accomplished in record time.  Dr. Singh has real time working experience of implementing Power Distribution Reforms and Rural Electrification programs in India.

Dr. Singh had led POWERGRID to global recognition.  He was the initiator, the founder member and the President (2007-08) of the International Group of Very Large Power Grid Operators (VLPGO) – now known as GO15.  Further, he was associated with international bodies like CIGRE, Paris (was President, CIGRE-India), Member, World Energy Council, USA etc.

Dr. Singh is an Independent Director in a number of top rated corporates.  To name a few, Azure Global Power, Azure Power India, Power Generation, Transmission & Urja Vikas (Energy Development) Companies of Rajasthan, Bajaj Electricals, Larsen & Toubro etc.  Dr. Singh had  been advising the World Bank as well as the Govt. of Telangana on subjects of his expertise and had been on the Board of various educational institutions viz.  Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra and National Institute of Technology, Patna. Till February, 2016 he was the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati.

Dr. Singh  is  the recipient of many national and international awards. To name a few:

Green Award 2006 by The World Bank. EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute), USA, Power Delivery Individual Product Champion Award Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) Award for Excellence and Outstanding contribution to the Public Sector Management – Individual category. Fellowship of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Dr. Singh has published two books -"Grids of Change” & “Enterprise of the Soul“. He is also working on a few others. Dr. R.P. Singh did his graduation and post-graduation, securing second position in Mechanical Engineering, from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Singh was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by BHU in 2007.

After post-graduation, Dr. Singh worked with Tatas (Power & Steel) and joined NTPC in early 1977 in formative stage.  He excelled there and was among the top notch performers.

Dr. Singh having worked with Tatas, NTPC & POWERGRID, has vast experience in almost all facets of power sector in managing critical organizational issues such as organizational structure, development of systems & procedures etc.   He is known for his singular contribution in bringing economy in project and operational cost through vigorous direction and oversight.

I am basically a Mechanical Engineering Graduate and joined Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and worked there for Six (6) years, thereafter joined NTPC and worked for twelve (12) years, thereafter shifted to POWERGRID and worked there for eight (8) years, thereafter joined National Grid Company plcUK and was posted as Country Manager India and worked there for Three (3) years, for a shortwhile work for Bactel Group of US as Consultant on Indo-Srilanka under the Sea Cabelling Transmission Project as Lead Member and finally re-joined POWERGRID and worked there again for about Nine (9) years and then superannuated as Executive Director in December 2010.  Since January 2011, working as a Consultant with IL&FS Energy Development Company Limited (IEDCL).  

I have worked for almost Thirty (38) years and additional Ten (10) years as Consultant in Prime Power Sector Organisations of the country with International Exposure in one of the largest private Transmission Company at a Senior Position with a handsome salary.   My main fields at work had been Corporate Contracts, Corporate Commercials, Corporate Planning, Corporate Monitoring and Business Development.  I had played a key role  in Indian Electricity Act Amendment Bill and Formation of Regulatory Commission Bill 1998 which permitted Regulatory Regime in India and permitting participation under Private Transmission in the country.  My key strengths are Business Development and Business Relations in all facets of Power Generation, Transmission, Distribution including Renewable projects.
